Long time no Bleach! Halloween is the time to watch some horror movies or read some creepy stories in the dark* to get that adrenaline rush. I am an avid reader of psychological, thriller, horror, and survival manga and read those types of stories all year long. This time, however, I’d like to make some Webtoon recommendations instead of the usual anime and manga suggestions. Webtoons are Korean webcomics in which the reader slides or scrolls to read panels that are usually arranged in a vertical layout. They are usually fully colored and highly detailed and everyone looks attractive and fabulous. Here are five creepy Webtoons you can read in the dark this Halloween.
1. Distant Sky
Gangnam in complete darkness…
“Am I the only one alive? What’s going on?”
… A boy wakes up to find himself in a building full of dead people. No cars, no electricity and no stars in the sky… Not only Gangnam, but the entire city seems deserted.
Distant sky is a horror mystery Webtoon with elements of action and drama. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic South Korea where entire districts have collapsed into deep holes. No one is safe, and I really mean no one is safe. The South Korean government seems to know what has happened, and the public cannot be made aware of the truth. Survivors will be shot…which is kinda better than living anyway. Distant Sky revolves around two teenagers, Haneul and Heyool, and their struggle to survive. Any terrible situation that you can imagine happening to these two will happen but only much, much worse. There were weeks where readers would just cry and pray that Haneul and Heyool would just get a break and finally find some happiness.
Once you get into it, this Webtoon is hard to put down. It will make you feel many things, the most prominent reaction being utter confusion. The timeline jumps around throughout the three seasons of this Webtoon, but once you reach the much-appreciated flashback that explains the timeline chronologically, everything will make sense and your life will be complete. My favorite Webtoon of all time.
There’s a serial killer in my house!
“Last year, January 16, April 25th, December 8th…do you know…what these dates are? … The days my father went on business trips. They’re also the days that someone went missing in this neighborhood.” There’s a crazy serial killer on the loose and he’s killing unsuspecting people everywhere. Bastard is really killing it in the creepy/dark facial expressions department.
A Thriller Webtoon full of suspense and a main character with more than just some daddy issues.Who is the serial killer? Read the Webtoon to find out!
3. Chiller (2015 소름)
Chiller Thriller Ready to Serve Your Spine.
Chiller is a collection of thrillers. There are a few things you should know about this Webtoon before proceeding. This Webtoon is almost interactive; it works with your senses to give you the feeling of suspense and fear. Chiller is meant to be read with the sound on. You know that feeling when you’re watching a silent movie and it’s silent and then something pops out with some surprising noise? This is it. At the beginning of each chapter, you will see the following message:
The following is a special Chiller Thriller which may include shocking scenes. Viewer discretion is advised for pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weak hearts.
Turn up your volume when reading <Chiller> for more immersive experience.
Fun for you; not so fun for your heart. You have been warned.
4. Tales of the Unusual (기기괴괴)
Series of unusual, strange, and mysterious thriller.
Another collection of short stories. Some stories are creepy; others, not so much. Even if you’re not interested or are deterred by the 100+ chapters, do give the short story “My Wife’s Memories” a chance. It’s a refreshingly beautiful tale that’s not remotely terrifying. The reason I’m recommending this series is because of this one story alone.
5. Dead Days (데드데이즈)
Beginning on the 4th day after a zombie virus broke out, this is a story about the will to live, human instincts and our selfish desires. A thrilling tale about the survivors of a zombie apocalypse.
No horror story list is complete without zombies. Dead Days is not your average zombie thriller. Unlike many other zombie apocalypse stories, the zombies here aren’t after brains, and getting bitten by a zombie doesn’t turn you into a zombie. The Webtoon synopsis leads you to believe that a virus breakout has turned [almost] everyone (yes, everyone as in everywhere in the world) into a Zombie. Some people lose their sanity when they find out that their family members’ deaths could have been averted…after they had already slaughtered all the zombies. So if the spread of zombies is not through some sort of disease, how did this zombie breakout occur? This Webtoon is full of psuedoscience, crazy cult practices, and conspiracies.
The series is currently back to the original timeline following three months of flashbacks (Dead Days 0/D-Day).
